The Challenge program began in the summer of 1980. The program initially started out of the necessity to provide Georgia Tech minority freshmen a means of introduction to the strenuous academic environment of engineering. Rapid growth and exposure of the program caused participation numbers to rise from approximately 30 students in the early stages to as many as 80-100 students in recent years.
